A world leader in steel production and one of the largest in mining, the ArcelorMittal Group has customers in 160 countries and has more than 190,000 employees. In its 11 research centers, around 1,300 researchers develop more efficient products and processes aimed at generating value for customers and ensuring future growth.

ArcelorMittal Brasil operates in the production of steel in the country, with an installed capacity of over 12.5 million tons/year. With industrial plants in six states, it employs around 16 thousand people. It produces high quality long and flat steel for the automotive, home appliance, packaging, civil construction and shipbuilding industries. It is also active in mining, power generation, production of renewable bioreducer and information technology. Its extensive distribution and service network meets the demands of domestic and international markets.

Through creative environments that relate to the ecosystem, ArcelorMittal encourages and supports the development of innovative ideas aimed at improving the internal processes of products and services, and also aimed at contributing to global efforts to face the global challenges of humanity.

The industrial business unit ArcelorMittal Brasil Longos, based in Juiz de Fora – MG, leads an innovative Industrial Logistics Master Plan program called Intelligent Logistics, comprising a series of projects. This plan was conceived in 2018. In 2019 it was already possible to carry out the first proofs of concept and, even during the entire period of the pandemic (2020/2021) it remained active and strong in its objectives of producing results and delivering the first technological solutions that operate In real time.

In 2021, the project is already showing its fruits, reaching its maturity with the Rollout actions in the Industrial plants. The creator and Project Leader, Wanderson Guedes Terror, Project Specialist & IT and TA Solutions – ArcelorMittal presents the first Technological Innovation packages:

The choice and use of world-class products and industrial robustness was crucial to the success of the Project. IMPINJ products were exclusive for RFID solutions and products from other companies for other requirements. According to Terror, these are Projects to serve the Industry with solutions to operate in a strategic, critical mission, in a hostile environment that requires high availability.

IMPINJ was the main partner in the project, supporting the channels through its product engineering team.

The Intelligent Logistics project: ArcelorMittal Brasil Longos continues to grow. In addition to the expansions planned for 2022 in new business units with the technological update with the Impinj R700 reader, new challenges are being proposed. The objective is to always use the application of the Industry 4.0 concept with RAIN RFID.

First batches of RAIN RFID labels Brazil's Post Office

First global program for post cargo tracking with RAIN RFID technology, Correios project in Brazil advances to the delivery stage of the first batches of labels

As is the public knowledge of this project of Correios in Brazil, what happens together with the UPU, follow the global RFID standardization of GS1 and already has most of the systems in operation. Understand the process:

The selection of the label supplier followed all the project criteria and through a public notice the winner of the delivery of the first batches has been reached. The company Inovacode, Impinj channel, is supplying the first batches of labels for the project, in partnership with the inlay provider Beontag.

There was a need to adopt the most used standard on the market and that presented better benefits. Standardization allows customers to obtain gains in their processes, since any company will be able to use the tags used by Correios to track its supply chains. The standard adopted for this use case is the SSCC, (Serial Shipping Container Code) (GS1-128): key identifier of a logistical unit to combine commercial elements packaged together for storage and/or transport purposes, such as boxes and pallets.

These first labels that will initially be used directly by Correios for orders, with RFID technology incorporated passed the quality process of technical inlay performance standards for use in logistics or postal processes, several field trials were carried out, involving the wide range of types of cargo that are processed daily by Correios.

The installation steps of the readers of this project, at the entrance and exit gates of the main sorting units and distribution centers of Correios throughout the country is well advanced and many of them are in operation.

Production RAIN RFID Labels

See the details of the production process, quality control and shipping of batches of labels:

Inovacode’s CEO , Guilherme Carrapatoso

The CEO of Inovacode, Guilherme Carrapatoso comments that the product approved for this first batch was: “Inovacode INLAY E702 70×14 – M730”.

The product was supported by strategic partners such as BEONTAG, provider of the inlay, aTag, provider of the label personalization solution, SATO with RFID printers, as well as IMPINJ, provider of the M730 CHIP.

The labels are being delivered printed and engraved in the established standard SSCC (Serial Shipping Container Code).

“In this initial batch, 7 million tags were printed in a few weeks, produced in our own facilities. To achieve this goal in record time, we worked in 3 shifts. This is just the first batch of 30 million tags planned for upcoming purchases. This project has the potential to move an entire ecosystem associated with Correios with volumes of around 500 million labels”, comments Carrapatoso.

Inovacode partners in the project:

The solution, therefore, will be integrated into the current Correios system, OTS (Object Tracking System), developed for the use of bar code technology, by means of reading – manual or in automated sorting equipment – of tracking labels that are affixed to the packages, such as Sedex labels. To this end, RAIN RFID tags will be printed and engraved in the established standard, SSCC (Serial Shipping Container Code). The system, centralized in Brasília, has information sent to the UPU cloud, in Switzerland, bringing great gains to the entire traceability process at Correios and, consequently, to the national market.
